What's Happening

NEWEST STUFF IS AT THE TOP

April 28th

Another update from Tom!  He's in the middle of Mountains right now, and should be done on 05 May and on to Florida.  I got a short letter from him, along with all his journal updates, and he seems like he's doing really well- definitely looking forward to getting Dahlonega over with for once and for all, and enjoying (as much as he can, given the circumstances) seeing a lot of buddies from school.

Please keep up the Guestbook comments, letters, and good thoughts if you can.  It'll all be done with soon!

Be sure to check back in a week or so for more updates and the good news that Mountains is OVER... keep Tom and his classmates in your thoughts and prayers, and have a great weekend!  As always, thanks for stopping by.

April 15th

Address update, and a new round of journal entries.  I heard from Tom this morning!  They were allowed a 5 minute phone call before starting up Mountains again.  Today is zero day (times three...).  He's doing well, and excited to get Mountains started and finished for good.  He wanted me to say hello to everyone, and thank you for the letters and messages.

His address until 05 May will be:

Ranger Martin, T.

5th BN, RTB

B CO, 1st PLT, 3rd SQD

ATTN: Class 501-06

1 Camp Merrill

Dahlonega, GA 30533-1802

Please keep up the Guestbook comments and letters if you can.  Keep him in your thoughts and prayers, and check back for his next round of journal entries in about a week.

As always, thanks for reading.  Have a good weekend and a Happy Easter.

April 6th

Rotten news from Da"hell"onega, as Tom and a few of his classmates have taken to calling it.  They had a shakedown the other day, and Tom had some "contraband"... a packet of Gatorade powder.  That packet cost him and about 30 of his classmates another recycle... he's on hold right now and will rejoin the next class, 06A-06, on the 15th.  His new graduation date is May 26th.  For all the details, read his journal entries below.  And, for the next week, letters can be addressed to:

Ranger Martin, T.

5th BN, RTB

c/o Student Ops

ATTN: 06-06 Hold for Class 06A-06

1 Camp Merrill

Dahlonega, GA 30533-1802

He's doing alright- unhappy, and kind of angry with himself for keeping that packet of Gatorade but overall, he's alright.  And hey, third time's the charm...

And that's all for right now... sorry I couldn't update about Tom's recycle when I found out about it on Sunday, but he wanted me to wait for his actual journal entry about the whole thing and post that to let everyone know instead.  And, by the way, my flowers were gorgeous and a complete surprise- even if he did try to get away with breaking the rules and hiding some Gatorade powder during Mountains, I've got to say he's a pretty wonderful guy.

Keep up the Guestbook comments, letters, and good thoughts and, eventually, Mountains (Round Three) will be over and it'll be onto Florida, and then graduation- finally!

Thanks for your time, and have a great night,

-Erika

March 26th

Tom started Round Two of his Mountains Phase yesterday afternoon.  He was able to call me while he was on hold this past week, and it was great to hear his voice and his stories.  Luckily, he had a lot of "good dudes" on hold with him, to use a Tom-ism, and life wasn't half-bad.  Of course he's not excited about starting Mountains up again, but he's real excited to get it over with, get onto Florida, earn his tab, and leave Ranger school far, far behind in his past.

Lots of journal updates today... everything from his last couple of weeks in the Mountains and his patrol experiences, to the end of his time on hold.  First though, his new address is:

Ranger Martin, T.

5th BN, RTB

1st SQD, 2nd PLT, C CO

ATTN: Class 06-06

1 Camp Merrill

Dahlonega, GA 30533-1802

Again, any letters or comments would be much appreciated.  Doing Mountains the first time was bad enough- doing it a second certainly won't be any better.

And that's that... the end of Tom's time on recycle hold.  When we talked on Friday night/Saturday morning, he told me the number 5 is added to the roster number of every Mountains recycle (Darby recycles get a 4, and Florida recycles get a 6).  He gained back a whole bunch of weight this past week, and caught up on some sleep, and is optimistic and determined about beginning and finishing Mountains for good.

He also wanted me to thank everyone for all the comments and IM messages I've been able to forward on, and the letters sent his way, and asked for you to keep him and all the recycles in your thoughts and prayers during these next few weeks.

As always, thanks for reading, and I'll update as soon as I hear something new... hopefully within a week or so.

Until then, take care,

Erika

March 18th

Revised update for today: good news, and some not-so-good news.  The good news is that, yes, Tom did finish the Mountain Phase.  The not-so-good news is that he's got to do it all over again.  He ran into some trouble during his patrols and, unfortunately, his 90% peer eval rating didn't count for anything when it came to the actual counting of "Go's" and "No-Go's".  I got to speak with him on the phone this morning, and he said he sent me a letter with some journal updates that will explain it better.  Once I get them, I'll post the full story on here.

That being said, he's got a new class and a new address.  He doesn't know the squad, platoon, or company yet, but his basic information is:

Ranger Martin, T.

5th BN, RTB

ATTN: Class 06-06

1 Camp Merrill

Dahlonega, GA 30533-1802

He'll re-start Mountains this upcoming Saturday (the 25th), and his new graduation date is May 5th.  Keep up the letters and comments if you can.  He said during their last mail call he got about 20 letters, all of which helped to make the day better.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.  Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend.

March 8th

Found another letter from Tom waiting for me when I got home this evening!  They've passed the halfway point, and have less than a month until graduation on 07 April.  He's still doing well, and enjoying the mountain phase (if you can enjoy any phase of Ranger School...), but fatigue and a general 'worn out' feeling are starting to set in.  If you can leave a message that I can send on or write a letter to give him some encouragement, I know he'd greatly appreciate it.

Again, his address until 18 March is:

Ranger Martin, T.

5th BN, RTB

2nd SQD, 2nd PLT, A Co

ATTN: Class 05-06

1 Camp Merrill

Dahlonega, GA 30533-1802

Also, some more of his daily journals:

And that's all for now.  Pray for some good, warm weather for the next couple of weeks- they'll be conducting FTX's until the 16th and it can get awful cold up in those mountains.  As always, thanks for reading.

Take care,

Erika
